Recently, I worked with a client who accepted a new job got as a personal assistant for a very wealthy and prominent executive. About 50% of her role involved attending social events and she hated the way she looked in pictures. People think they have to be confident first before they can learn how to look good in pictures. But, it is totally the opposite. Knowing how to look good in pictures first, will give you more confidence. As an athletic trainer, I’ve worked with celebrities, professional athletes, and some of the top modeling coaches in the industry who shared with me their secrets on how to look good in every photo. The following photo tips on how to look good in pictures are easy to apply and all you have to do is find your favorites.

The Triangle Pose

Taking a good picture is all about angles. When taking a picture at an event where you are the only one being photographed, stand at an angle that is never facing the camera. Creating angles by placing your hands on your hips, will give the illusion of looking thinner and shapelier which will give any woman added confidence. Don’t forget to smile!

The Window Shot

Natural light is fresh, and bright, and will always make you look younger and your skin smoother. Depending on the time of day, take pictures with the window in front of you, or in the back. Natural light doesn’t cast shadows on your face as long as it is not competing with electric lighting, therefore, turn them off. Pictures look better with morning light either sunny or cloudy. The closer you are to the window the better!

The Invisible High Heels

There’s a lot you can learn from a Barbie Doll! Like Barbie, you can stand on your tip toes for pictures in flat shoes or barefoot. Stand on your tip tose about 2 inches. This will instantly elongate your legs, will make you look taller, your legs slimmer, and your butt better. This pose is great for the beach.

The Stance

Victoria Beckham is known for her stance pose. How you do it: Place one hip forward, staggering your legs and lean back just a little. Add an angle by placing your hand on your hip, or dropping your arms to the side. Pose at an angle so as to not have your body directly facing the camera. With this pose, you always look on point!

The Perfect Chin

Beauty is not only about putting your best foot forward but also your chin. This pose gives the illusion of a thinner and longer neck. To make the pose more relaxed and natural, place your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Say goodbye to the double chinny, chin, chin! Say hello to poise and glamour. How To Look Good In Pictures

The tilt and push is a pose that anyone looks good doing. How it is done: Tilt your head slightly to the side, sit or stand straight, and push out your chest. It feels a little odd, but this pose guarantees you will look amazing every time. When you push out your chest, what is really happening is your posture improves with the alignment of your spine. It feels awkward because most people sit in a slouched position. Another technique with similar a similar result is to push out your forehead and ear to the front. This brings out your jawline. It is the jawline that creates a thinner look on camera. Not only does this pretty lady look thin, but the pose brings out more of her beauty and confidence.

The Fake Walking Leg

Celebrities like Jessica Alba like the fake walking leg. It always makes you look thinner and taller. Here is how you do it: Place one foot slightly out in front of the other and come up on your toes. It looks like you are actually walking somewhere. This one may take some practice to get it to look natural, but it is worth your time.

Use Your Hands

Portrait photography comes alive when your hand can give added expression. Playing with your hair gives photos a more human quality and provides character and mood. Don’t be afraid to use this pose in everyday pictures to add both mystery and playfulness.

Tilting your head to the side is a pose that signals your playful side. It also can expose your vulnerable side  It shows the world you are a trusting person, fun, delightful, and honest. This particular angle allows for light to be used to your advantage by making you look younger.

The Seated Pose

Crossing your legs communicates femininity and poise. Yet, crossing the wrong leg can mean disaster! To avoid a front view that is not appealing, sit at an angle. Cross the leg that is furthest from the camera so as to not show too much of your leg and expose more than you intend to. This pose will help highlight your calf muscles and elongate the legs. If you’re worried about your thighs looking smushed when they’re crossed, push off your tippy-toes to raise your bottom thigh ever so slightly off of the chair, then lift your top leg so it’s just barely resting on your bottom one. Posing at a side angle and looking over your shoulder is a bold pose. It shows total confidence and playfulness at the same time. How to do it: Stand at an angle and look over your shoulder. When taking a picture, allow your lips to slightly separate and place your tongue on the roof of your mouth. Allowing the lips to naturally part, gives a natural look, soft and sensual look.
