I’m hoping you can help me, please!! I have severe crepey skin on my face, arms, and legs. I walk 30 minutes daily and sometimes I swim in an indoor pool at my gym. I’m using a popular firming cream daily, but I am not seeing much difference. Thank you so much for writing me! You are not alone with it comes to experiencing crepey skin! It’s becoming more and more of a problem. As you have read in many of my newsletters, I work with celebrities, models, and fitness professionals that need to either lose weight fast or need to get their skin ready for a photo shoot. I’ll share with you several things you can tweak so as to get effective, quick results. Before any exercise program can work, you’ve got to change your diet by making sure you are eating at least 3-4 fresh vegetable and fruits servings daily, incorporate superfoods like matcha green tea, and make sure you are drinking at least 64 ounces of water daily to help new collagen production in your skin, to help firm your skin and make your skin care products work better, and to properly hydrate your body for weight loss. Here is my experience with exercise and tight skin. Many are great for overall fitness and cardiovascular health, but few help you tighten your skin. Here is a list of exercises that DO NOT help tighten your skin.
Walking – walking is a great form of exercise and requires no special equipment, expensive gym membership. All you need are a pair of good quality fitness shoes, decent weather, and you’re good to go. Walking is excellent if you are a beginner to working out, and is very effective as a great way to burn calories for weight loss and overall health and wellness. However, walking will not tighten your skin.
Running – There is an exercise that helps to build stamina and endurance. You can burn up to 7 calories a minute with a light jog. It helps strengthen your cardiovascular system, helps to improve lung capacity, helps to prevent high blood pressure, and increases your immune system. But, running will not tighten your skin.
Fitness Dancing – There are a lot of popular fitness dance forms that are fun to do, people of all ages can do them, and you can improve balance, rhythm, and endurance. In addition to physical benefits, dancing can help life mood, reduce stress, and help to improve confidence. All of these benefits are amazing, but they will not tighten your skin.
The Elliptical – An elliptical trainer machine is a machine that combines stair climbing, running, and walking at the same time. It is great if you want to build up your fitness endurance, improve lung capacity and strength, and it burns more calories in less time. The handles allow you to work your upper body in coordination with your lower body. This machine provides a low impact on your joints, which can be a better alternative to a treadmill. Though there are a lot of benefits to using the elliptical trainer, you can gain lean muscle mass so, this type of exercise will not tighten your skin.
Yoga and Pilates – These are two different exercise forms are excellent for building core and all over muscle strength. They help to elongate the body and help to improve flexibility and skeletal strength. They strengthen ligaments and help to create a more long, lean, toned look. They help with rejuvenation and are often used for rehabilitation in some forms. They come to a close 1st when it comes to tightening the skin and for those with joint conditions, these two forms of exercise are excellent to incorporate into your daily workout regime. FACIAL yoga can tighten your face and out of the above exercising, but these workouts will help you achieve minimally tighter skin.
The easiest exercise to tighten your skin is strength training. Weight training can help to develop your muscles which in turn can help fill out areas of loose skin. Even though cardio exercise is great for overall health and weight loss and to maintain a healthy weight, it’s strengthening and increasing muscle density that helps to tone and reshape the skin. Fat can’t turn into muscle, but building more muscle will help to burn more fat. If weight loss is not a concern, improving bone and muscle will help as a catalyst for creating new collagen and elastin which are essential to creating new skin cells resulting in the tighter more youthful skin.
Maria, by adding weight training to your walking regime, you will speed up your metabolism, burn more fat, and the building of extra muscle fibers will not only help to tighten your skin faster, but it will help PREVENT getting more crepey skin!
