What Is Acne?
What is acne? The term acne came from the word Acne Vulgaris. It is a skin disease caused by the changes happening in the skin structures such as the sebaceous gland, skin pores, and hair follicles. The abrasions caused by acne are commonly known as zits or pimples. Blackheads and whiteheads are also part of an acne breakout. If you think that you are the only one affected by the hideous acne, think again. Almost eighty-five percent of those undergoing the adolescent stage is affected by the said skin disease. Although acne can be treated during their teenage years, others are unfortunate that their acne problem persists until adulthood. There is no specific period where one can tell how long acne will last. However, several things can be done to treat acne.
What Causes Acne?
Hormones: According to some studies, certain hormones known as androgens trigger the formation of acne as they enlarge the sebaceous glands in the skin. They then cause these oil-producing glands to increase sebum or oil production, which then leads to the formation of plugs and serves as more food for the acne-causing bacteria. These hormones are present in both men and women and usually surge at puberty. This fact will explain why teenagers develop armpit and pubic hair, and why boys develop facial hair and deeper voices, other than why acne forms. Estrogens, the female hormones, also play a large role in the development of acne, particularly in girls. It is important to note first that a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle is a result of the changes in the estrogen levels in her body. This can explain why this skin condition in a female way gets better and then gets worse as she goes through her monthly menstrual cycle. For this cause, however, many doctors suggest treatments with birth control pills that contain helpful estrogens.
Bacteria: Another potent cause of acne is the bacteria that normally thrive on the skin. These bacteria are known as Propionibacterium acnes, and they are responsible for causing the condition to develop. According to certain studies, acne develops as these bacteria emit substances that trigger redness and inflammation. Aside from that, they also make enzymes, which then dissolve the sebum or oil into the irritating substances that make the inflammation worse.
Genetics: Some people also believe that acne is caused by some genetic factors. As you may know, it can run in some families. So, many have thought that if you have parents or relatives who have bad acne, there is also a great possibility that you’ll get it. With the genetic factors, many have claimed that there’s no way for you to stop acne from coming.
Other Possible Causes: Other possible causes of acne can be stress, cosmetics, medication, and diet. These are just actually minor factors that can cause acne, but many have found out that they are somehow great aggravators of this skin condition. Stress and diet, in particular, dont actually cause it to form, but many have believed that these two will potentially aggravate acne and some other skin condition you have.
Knowing what can cause acne is very helpful because it gives you a place to start action steps. The next step is to find out what type of acne you have.
Types of Acne
Acne Vulgaris, translated as ‘common acne,’ is the most common type of acne. It is better known as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.
Blackheads – occur in partially blocked pores. Dead skin cells, bacteria, and sebum (the substance that causes oily skin) drain to the surface of the skin; the pigments are exposed to air, which causes the black color. Blackheads can take a long time to clear up.
Whiteheads – Contained beneath the surface of the skin, the trapped sebum, dead cells and bacteria are completely blocked in the pores.
Pustules – With the appearance of a red circle with a white or yellow center, this form of acne is more often called Pimples or Zits.
Nodules – Much larger than other forms of acne, nodules form hard lumps beneath the surface of the skin which can be painful and last for several months. Highly susceptible to scarring, this form of acne is recommended to be treated by a dermatologist.
Cysts – Similar to a nodule, this form of acne is filled with pus. Like nodules, cysts can be very painful and lead to scarring if untreated. Cysts should be treated by a dermatologist.
Acne Conglobata – More common in males than females, this rare form of acne vulgaris is extremely disfiguring. Large lesions form on the face, chest, back, buttocks, upper arms, and thighs, sometimes accompanied by numerous blackheads. Acne Conglobata can cause severe psychological as well as physical suffering, damage to the skin and permanent scarring. This condition can last for several years.
Acne Fulminans – A sudden case of Acne Conglobata, with a fever and aching joints. Generally treated with oral steroids.
Gram-Negative Folliculitis – A bacterial infection that causes pustules and cysts, this form of acne may be caused by long-term treatment of acne with antibiotics.
Pyoderma Faciale – Affecting only females usually between ages 20 and 40, most commonly in women who never had acne before, this type of acne consists of painful pustules, cysts, and nodules on the face. Permanent scarring is potential. Generally clears up within a year.
Acne Rosacea – Notably affecting people over the age of 30, Acne Rosacea causes a red rash on the face. Pimples or other skin blemishes may also be present. This should not be confused with Acne Vulgaris as there are two different treatments for these types. Acne Rosacea occurs more frequently in women than men but is more severe in the men it affects.
A Skincare Routine For Acne
Make Sure You Cleanse Two Times Daily
The first step in effectively treating an acne condition is properly cleansing the affected areas with an appropriate cleansing agent.
In addition to choosing a proper cleansing product as part of your acne treatment regimen, you also need to keep in mind that the cleansing component of an acne treatment program depends upon regularity. In other words, in most cases, you need to fully cleanse the affected areas of the skin at least two times a day. Cleansing your skin regularly will help prevent the formation of more acne, will help eliminate acne cause bacteria, and will help keep your skin hydrated.
Exfoliate Two to Three Times A Week
Many people overlook the necessity of exfoliating when it comes to exercising and implementing an acne care and treatment program. Exfoliating your skin is an extremely important component of an overall acne care and treatment regimen. The process of exfoliating your skin works to effectively remove dead skin cells and embedded oils that if left unattended can cause aggravation. There are some excellent products that a person can utilize to ensure that the exfoliating process properly is completed. Choose an exfoliating product that is specially created for acne-prone skin. This will ensure that it is mild and will not irritate your skin.
Use A Toner After Every Cleaning
The purpose of using a toner is to help close your pores, it helps to restore skin to normal ph balance, and help your other skincare products absorb and penetrate the deeper layers of your skin better. It also can help get rid of any residue of dirt and bacteria you didn’t get rid of when you cleaned your skin. Toners that have ingredients like plant extracts, can help to heal, repair, and speed up skin cell turnover which results in allowing you to have clearer, radiant skin
For those ‘ wake-ups in the morning flare-ups,” there are 3 crazy hacks that a lot of Instagrammers are posting that claim clear skin in the morning. Here they are:

3 Crazy Hacks That Instagrammers Are Doing To Get Rid Of Pimples Fast!
The Garlic Hack
Garlic is known for its healing properties and Instagrammers say this one works. All you need is:
- Purchase a fresh garlic bulb.
- Take one of the garlic cloves and smash it into a paste, or simply cut slivers in the top so the juice can come out easily.
- Put the juice on your pimple.
- Sleep with it on your pimple overnight.
Sources say this works.
The Tooth Paste Overnight Zit Solution
Using toothpaste to get rid of a pimple is an overnight remedy that has been around since the 1950s. They claim it works. Here is what you do:
- Cleanse your face and dry your skin thoroughly.
- Use a Q-Tip to extract the toothpaste from the tube.
- Put a small amount of toothpaste on the pimple.
- Let it dry before going to bed.
- In the morning wash your face.
They say this one works. If it doesn’t perhaps this next one will work better.
The Aloe Vera Gel Pimple Miracle
Fresh aloe vera gel is found in the leaves of the aloe vera plant. You can purchase an aloe vera plant at most garden and plant stores. Purchase a mature plant so you ensure the aloe gel is available in the leaf. Here are the steps:
- Cut a small section of the aloe vera leaf.
- Peal or cut the skin off.
- The inner portion of the leaf is the aloe vera gel.
- Place the gel in a small bowl and smash it into a paste.
- Plae the paste on the afflicted area.
- Allow to dry and sleep with this on your face overnight.
The remaining gel, place in the refrigerator to stay fresh. If you don’t get the results you want, you can always keep using it as a nightly facial mask for as an overall healthy skin treatment.
If these hacks don’t work, don’t give up. DIY treatments don’t always work for everyone nor do most people have the time to make them. I mean, do you want to go to bed smelling like an Italian restaurant? Who wants crusty toothpaste on their pillow? Aloe gel is great, but what if you don’t have the time? That’s why using a blemish control solution is easier.
