We all have that one friend, right? You know the one. She didn’t have to lose weight after having her baby or have to get rid of stretch marks that look like railroad tracks. However, the majority of mothers are either giving up and embracing their stretch marks or desperately trying get rid of them. I’m not a mother, but I did have stretch marks after losing over 60 pounds. WHAT ARE STRETCH MARKS?

Stretch marks are a common problem. 70 – 90% of all women have stretch marks on their body. This includes breast, stomach, hips, and buttocks. A stretch mark is a type of scar or tearing that happens in the dermis or epidermal components and what this does is it causes less elastin and collagen and this translates to the scars you actually see on your breasts, stomach, buttocks, hips, and thighs. Stretch marks come in different colors. Newly formed stretch marks are red, but older stretch marks are often white.  Stretch marks develop when our skin stretches or shrinks quickly. The abrupt change causes the collagen and elastin, which support our skin, to rupture. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear.

WHO GETS STRETCH MARKS?

Not everyone develops these narrow bands on their skin. Fluctuating hormone levels seem to play a role. You may also have a higher risk if people in your family get stretch marks. If you develop stretch marks, you’re most likely to do so during these times:

  • Growth spurts that happen in puberty
  • Pregnancy
  • Rapid weight loss or gain
  • Weight training when you have rapid muscle growth

HOW TO FADE STRETCH MARKS AFTER PREGNANCY
